Improvisation: Another Skill to Add to An Executive’s Storytelling Toolkit

Palm is not only upping the ante with the announcement of the Pre, they’re also raising the stakes as storytellers. In a time when more and more executives are looking for ways to connect with audiences, John Rubinstein and Roger McNamee demonstrate how taking risks outside the board room can have an impact and get a few laughs. We believe authenticity is the secret sauce to telling stories that resonate with audiences. Thanks, Roger and Jon for the opportunity to help Palm concept, develop and produce the story about the launch of the Pre.

Great video. You know, as good as the iPhone is, it really doesn’t have a “story” to go along with it – it’s just a cold, hard piece of metal/plastic. One wonders if the Palm team could use the amazing power of storytelling to give the Pre a personality and by doing that connect more closely with their customers.

Hmm, time will tell…

As a facilitator, I’ve done a lot of professional development and certification in traditional “facilitator skills” but the most valuable training I’ve ever done is improv.

The skills learned in improv theatre are so valuable in the innovation space because improv is all about being open to ideas that aren’t yours and building on them quickly to create new.

Improv skills are great for team work as well as teaching and transferring to clients and having them apply the principles of trust and commitment that are the underpinnings to any good scene.

And the most valuable advice that I learned from an improv instructor is that “improvisation is not the same thing as being unprepared.” It takes lots of skill, confidence and practice to be able to go in any direction that a co-worker or audience member suggests.
