Don’t Get Discouraged, Fight for What’s Right!

In every Q & A I get the same question: I’m in a culture that thinks presentations are fine being hideous and ineffectual, what should I do? Here’s a quick video I produced for you guys, with an accompanying PDF, that will hopefully help focus your strategy on high-stakes presentations (where there’s the most pay-off). The Presentation Landscape has examples of which presentations to fight for–and fight hard for–and which ones are distracting skirmishes that you shouldn’t bother with.

I really appreciate all of you who have taken up the cause of transforming the way we communicate so it resonates!

Thank you, Nancy. Your analogy is superb! Every quarterly earnings cycle I try… and try to get investor relations counselors/officers to listen to my ideas. I’ll keep at it.

This is really helpful. I sometimes feel like I’m hearding cats in my business where I’m trying to help them “get it”. Thanks

great help.. thanks.. i’ve been trying to change the presentation state in our company, at least my department, for quite some time and based on your video, i think i’ve spent too much time in the bottom left quadrant when i should be concentrating on the upper right..

Great post, it is far easier to point out to people when they need to put in their best work than to pester them to do it all the time.

The diagram illustrates when you should put in effort and when you can be a little more laissez-faire.

Nice!

Great stuff…

By far your best post to date – insightful, realistic and practical. Congratulations!

Awesome breakdown of the process of idea socialization!

I notice that you put “lecture” on the slideument half.

I’ve been championing better PowerPoint design among my professors at university because slideuments routinely put students to sleep for 1-3 hours and don’t help them learn (a la Richard E. Mayer).

Interested in your thoughts on whether I’m fighting the right fight.
