Last year was our first year for making predictions: http://blog.duarte.com/2009/01/five-predictions-for-presentations-in-2009/. I’m late to the party again this year, but I feel pretty excited about what 2010 will bring.
In the year 2010…
Audience and presenters will have 2-way communication. It won’t just be about the audience twittering to the backchannel.
Or, if there isn’t a movie about a slide show… there might be a movie about slides. Or a celebrity will use slides to create a tipping point for their cause. You know, like Oprah or someone. Just sayin’.
People are human, and desire human connections. The ones who make people feel are the ones who will be heard. Logical arguments and web traffic aren’t enough anymore.
Gads, could it get any worse? It’s only up from here. Meaningful best practices for presenting in this medium will to emerge, too. ‘Cause it’s bad. Real bad.
And last but not least:
The picture below speaks for itself (that’s a real Facebook exchange with an old classmate from Hattiesburg, MS–the home of Tiger Wood’s recovery program).

Enjoy 2010, everybody!

That’s what we’re trying to get across here in South Korea Nancy. Visual communication. It is difficult to get people to convert, but we are throwing everything at them this year.
Thanks always for your amazing insights and advice.
Like Amy, curious about #2 too
New to your blog but I like what I’ve read so far. Very interesting.
For point #1, do you foresee presenters having difficulties integrating this new 2-way communication into their presentations? I’m just having visions of presenters pausing every few minutes to read the tweets which can really interrupt the flow.
I hope this sort of thing takes off as I think it would make presentations a lot more worthwhile and interesting.
The presentation format will stay there at least in the scientific community. This is how the industry has been working for centuries and this is how it will continue working for many more years. Until, at least, today’s undergrads graduate, become distinguished professors and start organizing conferences by themselves. http://www.inthehaystack.com/blog/will-presentations-blur/
Heh – Nancy posting a retweet of Dave Gray tweeting a David Sibbet quote… a perfect visual thinking trifecta!
(And I really, really, really hope you’re right about #4.)
Ryan
The facebook screenie is hilarious. It represents concisely why I stopped sharing work-related content on Facebook (more grandma), and kept it to twitter (more geek).
Thanks for the Keynote script. I tried it and it works. I think it will be a great tool to use!
Interesting read. Regarding your predictions #1 & #3, I actually was hoping that the opposite would be the case in 2010 and had been preparing for same! Now let’s wait and see how things turnout as the year unfolds.

So, are you working on another movie project? You can’t just slip #2 in without telling us what you’re working on!!! And it’s about time for #5. I always point people to the book The Designful Company by Marty Neumeier.
