Nancy’s Talk from TEDxEast: You Can Change the World

   |    Nancy Duarte

Earlier this week, we shared the lessons we learned while trying to get a talk to fit into 18 teeny tiny minutes, now take a look at the talk that taught us.

This talk reveals the hidden structure that the greatest communicators and persuaders have used over thousands of years. Insights from literature and cinema helped reveal why the greatest communicators are riveting.

Nancy, what an inspirational speech! Congrats from Brazil!

  • http://www.experiate.net Paul Flanigan

Nancy, this should be required watching for anyone who gets on a stage.

Question: How much pure talent do you see in Steve Jobs or Dr. King that gives them this ability to communicate. We know they rehearse like crazy, but there is this inside ability that enables them to put it all together in this fashion. How much of the end product is talent?

    Fabulous talk.

Great presentation Nancy! I bet it was difficult crafting an inspiring call to action when they already see it coming, since you’re talking about presentation structure. Fantastic job pulling it off!

  • Vduquerroux

The Queen in her castle at last! Just feel inspired. Thank you Nancy (and your team)!

  • Biggity.

Your talk inspired me, and moved me to tears. Thank you for all the work you done.

    Hi Paul,

I think that Jobs and MLK are natural communicators and put together strong structures and emotional appeal. BUT, they work hard at it. It’s like any skill, it takes discipline to hone it. I would say that it’s their discipline that transforms their natural ability into greatness. Just like a dancer or musician who has to work hard to be great at their craft. It doesn’t go without a ton of work on their part.

    Aw. You’re welcome.

When I see a great speaker like Martin Luther King give a powerful speech, I often ask myself… what made that so good? Now I know. Just like most powerful photographs, you have got to have contrast. You showed us clearly with your slides, what we’ve been feeling for years. I’m reworking a speech today with a speech coach. I realized after seeing your presentation, that I need to make my bars higher. Thank you for changing MY world today!

    Informative and inspiring. Thank you.

I teach expository writing in the Creative Writing Department at a public, magnet school for the arts in Jacksonville, FL. My advanced students are going to hear your presentation within the next few weeks. They will relate to the 5-step story model as we use that frequently – they know about MLK from school – and they live in the Apple created Universe. Your use of literary terms is also another topic to which they can relate and I am looking forward to hearing their thoughts about communication through this lens. If you’re interested in knowing more about our school feel free to go to duvalschools.org/lavilla. I teach 6th to 8th graders. They have so much to say that we adults need to hear!

My daughter teaches at a charter school. Happy to send along a signed copy for your class. The book goes into greater detail on MLK and many other presenters who use the presentation form. Send your address to info at duarte dot com and it’ll get forwarded to me.

    Standing ovation for Nancy!

I think that changing the world starts from within, that war and peace start in our hearts and minds. I love Gandhi’s motto ‘we must be the change we wish to see in the world’.

    Thanks!

You inspire me Nancy. Thank you.

Nancy, I just saw your presentation and found it very helpful. In particular, I appreciate the clarity of your presentation. Succinct and to the point. Very, very helpful.

  • http://www.faithimagined.com Alisahopewagner

English teachers of all ages can use this model! Wow!!!

  • http://chezsg.posterous.com Cheryl

Absolutely brilliant. I especially liked the analysis of Martin Luther King’s speech.

  • Htkirk

    Nancy,

Enjoyed this so much. Thank you for sharing it with us at our cost of a click.

I especially liked the vulnerability at the end.
Great communication does come at a cost. And someone has to go first. You did.

I stumbled across your books a year or two ago in a bookstore and was enamored with them. I was so grateful that someone was writing in this area, had researched it, had been creative with it down to the product itself, and was excavating the value of story and the hard work it takes to do it well. It is a task/role-validating work.

So, I bought them from Amazon over the weekend and can’t wait to pour through them in my next venture where they will be foundational … vidsforlife.com & vidsforbiz.com… coming soon.

Perhaps I can find my way to your seminars on the west coast.
But for now … inspired, encouraged, and enabled from a distance.

    Hi Nancy,
I have recently read Resonate and really learnt a lot. The book summarizes and presents brilliant new ideas for presentations.
I hoping that you will write another book. Are you?

  • http://blog.bscopes.com bscopes

Nancy: wonderful presentation. It clearly summarizes a number things that I know and many that I should know but probably didn’t. I’m going to be coming back to this next time I’m putting together any kind of presentation or speech and try plotting out my talk against this approach. I think I’m also going to share this with my kids for the next time they need to do a presentation at school.

  • http://www.duarte.com/team/nancy Nancy Duarte

Thrilled you enjoyed the video Harvey. Good luck w/ your biz ventures!

  • http://www.duarte.com/team/nancy Nancy Duarte

I have ideas for a few more books but I’m afraid none of them will be as good as Resonate which I LOVED writing. Am struggling to get energized about the other book(s) but am marinating with them now.

  • Mo

Spectacular blog and thank you for taking the time out to reply

Nancy, where can I view your talk apart from youtube? I am in China so cannot access youtube. Would love to watch your speech.

  • John

Bookmarked. Nancy, I’ve learned more from your site in an hour than in 7 years working in sales. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

Wow, that was fantastic. I’d love to see the 45 min version (re: INK conference story). I really enjoyed slide:ology (my copy is all dog-eared and post-it-noted-up). Can’t wait for my copy of resonate to arrive. Great job and thanks for the gift of putting this together.

  • http://www.duarte.com/team/nancy Nancy Duarte

I’m afraid Vimeo is blocked in China. Here’s a YouTube version but the editing of slides isn’t as good as the Vimeo version http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1nYFpuc2Umk

    Ok, a third.

Wow, Nancy. Amazing on many levels. This video 100% deserves to go viral. Kudos!

  • J9_76

Brilliant! Thank you for such an engaging and inspiring presentation!

  • SuperPower

Oh man, that was a call to action that I don’t feel I can wriggle away from!

  • http://www.surfaceactive.com Mark

I would certainly say that it is 99% perspiration and 1% talent. I have seen footage of Steve Jobs in his earlier years and he was far from a good communicator. He, at some point, made a conscious decision to be very good at this. I’d say he managed!

  • http://www.duarte.com/team/nancy Nancy Duarte
  • AllProDadGeorge

very moving and incredibly brilliant analysis of the power of presentations . . .

  • Jackeeholder

This was such an amazing, rich speech. It was full of so much on so manay levels. I need to sit back for a moment and take it all in. I want to run and share this with so many people.

  • Yvonne Ohumukini Urness

Love this! Communication of an idea can truly change the world and Nancy’s cadence in delivering HER idea is perfection.

  • http://www.duarte.com/team/nancy Nancy Duarte

Thanks Yvonne. I had such a great time pulling this together!

  • http://twitter.com/JeffBollow Jeff Bollow

Nancy, I saw your profile on Lynda.com and immediately bought both your books. They’re brilliant. Not just good, not just great. Brilliant. I want to thank you for the time, energy and passion you’ve clearly poured into your work. I’ve been speaking for years and found that I did some of this stuff naturally (and when I did, those were the most powerful and empowering talks), but your profound insights and clarity filled in so many gaps that it will radically enhance my efforts. The irony is that I’ve been teaching story for a decade; it never occurred to me to structure it into my talks. It will take some practice to master all this, but it’s time I’ll enjoy — I could sit and re-read Resonate for days at a time. (Well, I *could*, if I had the time to do that!)

To anyone reading this, buy Resonate. It is a work of brilliance. To Nancy, thank you. You are my Yoda.

  • http://www.duarte.com/team/nancy Nancy Duarte

Wow Jeff, it’s wonderful to wake up to a sweet note like this. Thanks so much!

  • Mike Byrne

Engaging and brilliant. 18 minutes went by in a flash. I usually multi-task when watching presentations – not this time. Thank you.

  • http://www.duarte.com/team/nancy Nancy Duarte

    That’s a big complement! I love making it so people can’t multi-task.

  • Mike Mccurry

    Nancy, Hi there,

I have only recently been introduced to you and your blog through Twitter, and just wanted to tell you that I love your message. This TED presentation was brilliant and heartfelt. I could see it in your face throughout.

I look forward to meeting you some day and look forward to following your blog!

    Regards,

    @michaelmccurry

That last line was a killer.

On a different not I am totally going to steal this idea in my blog posts and marketing copy. You will get full attribution though :)

  • http://www.conorneill.com Conor

I agree with Mike ;-) Thank you for sharing… the big idea, and the personal story. Keep Creating!

  • Susan

Wow. I’ve been a fan of yours, Nancy, and of the Duarte group for a couple of years now and recommend your books to all of my participants in my presentation skills training workshops. This presentation was truly fascinating and I am thoroughly looking forward to experimenting and identifying how other successful presentations fit in with it. Thank you!

Thank you Susan for making presentations better!

    Outstanding, Nancy!

I loved the graphics and how they were presented along YOU providing the text.

No coincidence you picked tow of my favorite speakers.

    Thanks fo the lessons!

    Nancy, Amazing presentation.
I am taking this bussiness communication class, and Im going to thank my professor for advising us on going through your presentation. Very, very insightful. I am seeing presentation in a new light. I have always hated presenting, makes me too uncomfortable. Some of the things you mentioned though…its going to make presneting a lot easier for me.
    Thank you.

    Loved it!

  • Sheryl Connelly

Loved your talk. The posting of the video couldn’t have been more timely. I am preparing to give a TEDX talk next week. Your video reminded me to push further on my content and present my material as a story.

  • Brooke Estin

Wonderful talk, Nancy!  Thank you for investing so much of yourself in helping world-changing ideas inspire the passion needed to take them to the next level.  Strong communications is not a “nice to have”, but a “must”!
